Book Capers for Grades 2 & 3

Thursday, April 15, 4–4:45 p.m.
Fourth Grade Rats by Jerry Spinelli

The transition from 3rd to 4th grade isn’t as easy for Suds as it is for his best friend, Joey. According to Joey, 4th grade rats aren’t afraid of spiders, don’t carry babyish lunch boxes, and don’t cry. But they do push little kids, say "no" to their mothers, and eat real meat (like baloney). Being a rat doesn’t sound so great to Suds.

TornadoThursday, May 13, 4–4:45 p.m.
Tornado by Betsy Byars

As they wait out a tornado in their storm cellar, a family listens to stories about Tornado, a cardtrick playing, hole-digging dog that was blown into Pete's life by another tornado.

Scene Stealers Grades 4–8

book cover for Shark Beneath the ReefMar. 11, 4–4:45 p.m.
Shark Beneath the Reef by Jean Craighead George

Tomas Torres is determined to catch a shark, the greatest prize for the fishermen of the Sea of Cortez. It isn’t until the moment Tomas finally comes face to face with his dream that he realizes that the life of a fisherman is not always easy. This tale of Tomas and his life choices will not easily be forgotten!

The RiverThursday, Apr. 22, 4–4:45 p.m.
The River by Gary Paulsen

Because of his success in surviving fifty-four days alone in the wilderness, 15-year-old Brian is asked by the government to undergo a similar experience. Scientists hope to learn more about the psychology of survival. Sequel to Hatchet.

SeedfolksThursday, May 20, 4–4:45 p.m.
Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman

A great story of how a handful of lima beans, planted by Anna in a vacant city lot, sprouts a life of its own as various members of the neighborhood contribute to their community garden.

* Funded by the St. Charles Optimist Club.
