Youth Services Collections

Youth Services CollectionsThe collections in Youth Services offer a wide variety of resources in several formats covering many subject areas. Print resources include picture books, board books, beginning to read books, fiction for elementary and middle school, non-fiction, reference, large print, and periodicals. Audiovisual resources include audiocassettes, CDs, puzzles, CD-ROMs, videos, DVDs, audiobooks, Otis audio players, electronic books, and online resources.

  • Reference Collection:
    Includes general and specialized encyclopedias in the areas of science, animals, states, countries, history, Native Americans, as well as, indexes, bibliographies, almanacs, and other resources to fill the information needs of students in grades two through eight.
  • Monarch Award:
    The Monarch Award is given annually to the author and / or illustrator of the book voted as their favorite by Illinois students in grades K – 3.
  • Folk and Fairy Collection:
    Arranged by country in the J398.2 non-fiction area.
  • Special Needs Collection:
    Includes large print books for children and a sampling of Braille books.
  • Parent Collection:
    Features books that deal with a variety of parenting topics.

The criteria for selection of materials for youth are those enumerated in the Library Selection Policy. The Youth Services Department subscribes to the Freedom to Read Statement, the Library Bill of Rights, the Intellectual Freedom Statement, the Statement on Labeling, the Freedom to View Policy, the Resolution on Challenged Materials, and other policies of the St. Charles Public Library District relevant to the selection and access to materials.
