Will is a ward of the baron's castle because he is an orphan. At 15, the castle wards are apprenticed to learn a skill and Will desperately wants to be selected for battle master school to become a knight. Unfortunately, he is very small. Horace, his adversary, would probably be selected for battle school and he would just continue to harass Will the entire time they are there. The day of the choosing finally arrives, but Will doesn't get picked for battle school. In the room, there is a very secretive man who tells the baron that he would take Will. Will learns that this man is Halt, a very famous Ranger of the kingdom. Will is to become a Ranger, one who uses stealth and special skills with weapons to keep the kingdom's laws and to be the eyes against the enemy. Will becomes an excellent apprentice and starts his many adventures with Halt. This is book 1 in the Ranger's Apprentice series followed by The Burning Bridge.

Briar can hear plants talking to him. Daja has a true magic while working with metals. Tris can call up earthquakes, and tidal waves. They are all brought to reside in the discipline house, so that they can learn how to control their powers. It is only when a true disaster strikes, however, that they learn just how much good they can do.
