Laugh-eteria

This clever collection of poems will have you laughing out loud. One of my favorites is The Last Piece of Cake. 'Whoever ate the last piece of cake, I hope that you get a bellyache, or bit when you sit on a poisonous snake. Perhaps all the bones in your body will break. What's that you say? It was me? ME who ate the last piece of cake? My mistake.'

'Lights Out' by John Himmelman is a MUST read for the novice camper. Counselor Jim is having a difficult time getting the Scouts settled in for the night. The boys can't seem to fall asleep. They keep imagining all kinds of creatures who are just waiting until the lights are turned out to eat them, suck their blood, or make them sick. But never fear, Counselor Jim puts all their fears 'to bed' and the boys turn off the lights and fall fast asleep. The young reader will love the surprise ending that just might get those lights turned right back on!

Eleven-year-old Lonnie Collins Motion finds a way to express his feelings when his teacher asks his class to keep a poetry journal. The poems are about the things going on in his life, including his foster mom, his little sister, and the parents he lost in a terrible fire. Life in the inner city is not always easy, but through his writing Lonnie develops a new way of looking at things. The mostly free-form poetry beautifully conveys Lonnie's growth and development.

The Vikings were excellent seafarers with strong, fast ships. When farmland became scarce in Scandinavia, they began exploring across the ocean. This graphic novel illustrates the story of their travels; first to England and Ireland, and then across the Atlantic Ocean. They found Iceland, Greenland, and were the first Europeans to land on North America.
