Three animals find a crown in the forest on a rock labeled, 'For the Mightiest.' Soon, the elephant, bear, and lion are arguing about who deserves the crown. They decide that whichever one of them can frighten a little old woman the most will win the crown. One by one, they jump out to scare her, and soon they are fighting over which animal was most terrifying. Suddenly, a giant appears, and he takes the crown and seizes the animals. Will someone come along to save the animals? Who could be mightier than the giant?

At the ranch, she makes friends with Van, a local boy, and works hard to build the trust of an abused horse named Renegade. When Thea unearths the decades-old story of a four-year-old girl who disappeared from the ranch and was never seen again, she enlists Van to help her solve the mystery. This book is a retelling of the traditional Ukrainian tale in which a boy's lost mitten becomes a home from the cold for more and more animals. The repetition of what the animals say and the realistic looking illustrations make this book a great retelling.
