As part of a new student exchange program, 7th graders Catherine and Ivy June are chosen from their respective schools to take turns staying with each other for two weeks. Ivy June is from deep in coal mining country Kentucky and Catherine is from Lexington. Ivy June lives with her Mammaw and Papaw because her own parents' home is too small for them and their five children. They have no telephone or indoor plumbing. Catherine lives in a large home with four bathrooms, goes to a private academy, and has her own cell phone. During the two weeks, each must live through her own personal near tragedy. Told in journal entries, this book chronicles their expectations, discoveries and the realization that it's the heart, not the possessions that make a person what they are.

Tom isn't someone who takes a lot of risks. He's fascinated with Courtney, a girl in his class, and every day, he imagines a new way he could save her life through a secret superhero power. He doesn't actually talk with her, though. When Jessica joins his class, everything changes. Severe burns have altered her appearance, and Tom doesn't know how to handle his own reaction to her and the reactions of his classmates. When Tom is asked to bring homework to Jessica, he doesn't expect what he discovers when he starts to talk with her. Can Tom get over his reluctance to take risks and take a stand for Jessica?

The transition from 3rd to 4th grade isn't as easy for Suds as it is for his best friend, Joey. According to Joey, to be a 4th grade rat, you can't be afraid of spiders, carry a babyish lunch box, or cry. But rats do push little kids, say 'no' to their mothers, and eat real meat (like baloney.) Being a rat doesn't sound so great to Suds.
