Granddad gets so disappointed with Sally when she comes in from playing outside looking like a mess. She usually has leaves in her hair, bugs on her face, and twigs behind her ears. Sally would love to please her Granddad, but how can you climb trees, fight dragons, and make forts without getting a little dirty. Granddad tells Sally that when he was her age, he never got so filthy...or did he? When Sally accidently winds Granddad's watch backwards, Granddad goes back in time to when he was a child. It is then that we discover the real truth about Grandpa. The young reader will be able to identify with this fun-loving little girl and her Granddad in, 'The Backwards Watch' by Eric Houghton.

'Whennone of her favorite foods were at hand Kitty was forced to dine on Asparagus, Beets, Cauliflower, and Dill....' It's an alphabet book. No, it's a book about cats. Wait, I mean vegetables. It's definitely about good and bad behavior. When Kitty's family runs out of cat food and decide to give her vegetables, she retaliates in ways that are less than pleasant. After they supply her with her normal meals, she becomes, once more, her very sweet, cuddly self.

'Basho and the River Stones' by Tim Myers is a story based on the teachings of one of Japan's most revered poets, Matsuo Basho. Through the antics of a greedy fox, Matsuo introduces us to his unique form of poetry, a haiku. He also teaches us that the simple beauties of the world, give our lives 'radiance'. Enjoy this gentle story of generosity and friendship.

Illustrated by Ashley Bryan

Category: Animal, Folklore, Picture Books

Long ago, Blackbird was voted the most beautiful bird in the forest. The other birds, who were colored red, yellow, blue, and green, were so envious that they begged Blackbird to paint their feathers with a touch of black so they could be beautiful too. Although Black-bird warns them that true beauty comes from within, the other birds persist and soon each is given a ring of black around their neck or a dot of black on their wings -- markings that detail birds to this very day.
