'Lights Out' by John Himmelman is a MUST read for the novice camper. Counselor Jim is having a difficult time getting the Scouts settled in for the night. The boys can't seem to fall asleep. They keep imagining all kinds of creatures who are just waiting until the lights are turned out to eat them, suck their blood, or make them sick. But never fear, Counselor Jim puts all their fears 'to bed' and the boys turn off the lights and fall fast asleep. The young reader will love the surprise ending that just might get those lights turned right back on!

Lilly loves everything about school, especially her teacher, Mr. Slinger. Trouble comes when Lilly takes her purple plastic purse, three quarters, and movie star sunglasses to school. She has to show them to her class and doesn't listen when Mr. Slinger tells her to wait. Mr. Slinger takes them away for the day. Lilly is furious and no longer wants to be a teacher! She writes a mean note to Mr. Slinger, but she is very sorry about it later. The apology and forgiveness are wonderful elements, especially the interpretive dance!

Winner of the 2010 Caldecott Medal, this is a nearly wordless adaptation of Aesop's beloved fable. Varied perspectives including panels of close-ups make this a book you want to stop on every page to examine the detail. Words are not needed to show how important friends are- big and small.

Have you ever heard of a lion named Shirley Williamson? Shirley's name got her special attention, special accommodations, and special food at the zoo. This fact did not go unnoticed by the other lions, who all had ordinary names and received only ordinary attention. Due to the lions' bad behavior, the zoo's Board of Directors decided to change Shirley's name to Bongo. To make matters worse, they even fired her best friend and zoo keeper, Seymour. Shirley was not going to take this abuse lying down! Read, 'A Lion Named Shirley Williamson' by Bernard Waber to see how Shirley shows Seymour and the Board of Directors how important a name can really be!
