Jack's Garden

Henry Cole (1995), 24 pages
Illustrated by Henry Cole
Audience: Preschool - 1st Grade
Category: Fiction, Picture Books

A picture book about gardening for young children, this book spins a tale similar to the famous 'House that Jack Built,' but using a garden. 'This is the garden that Jack planted. This is the soil that made up the garden that Jack planted.' Throughout the book are pictures of the garden, the tools used in the garden, and the environmental particulars like the insects around the garden. Whenever a specific insect, seed, plant or tool is pictured, it is labeled with its name. While very young children may not understand the development of the story, the rhythm of the text and the pictures make this a wonderful introduction to gardening for young people.

John, Paul, George & Ben

Lane Smith (2006), 40 pages
Illustrated by Lane Smith

Category: Historical, Nonfiction, Picture Books

In John, Paul, George & Ben, we get a glimpse of Lane Smith's amusing interpretation of the childhoods of our founding fathers. John Hancock wrote his name so large on the school chalkboard that his teacher muses that it can be read from space. A fifth lad is also included in the book. Tom was 'always doing his OWN thing.' The book includes a page that separates fact from fiction which probably gave it the non-fiction Dewey number.

Those familiar with Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House series will love her retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk. Kate is a bit impulsive when it comes to decision-making. Blindly trading her family's cow and last hope for food away for the promise of some mysterious magic beans, Kate returns home excited. She is shocked when her mother throws the beans out the window. Kate finds a beanstalk towering to the sky that night, and she begins to climb. At the top, an old woman asks her to right the wrongs done to an innocent family. To do so, Kate must use all her cleverness against a fierce giant who could eat her in an instant.

Kitten and puppy lovers will love this nearly wordless picture book about a puppy pretending to be a kitten. The puppy can't do things quite like the kittens: his meow comes out more like a 'ruff,' and imitating the kittens' acrobatics on chairs leads to a fall, but they all have fun anyway. When his mom shows up to say it's time to go home, he waves goodbye to his new friends saying, 'Next time let's all be puppies!'
