Annie Oakley by Jan Gleiter and Kathleen Thompson tells the true life story of the legend Annie Oakley. Growing up, Annie's family was very poor. She did all she could to raise money to help her mom and dad. Earning enough money to put food on the table was very hard, until Annie fired her first shot. Annie became the best shot in Greenville. She was able to sell all the quail, beaver, and mink she could shoot to the storekeeper, Mr. Katzenberger. This helped Annie's family. One day, Annie Oakley entered a shooting contest where she met and beat her husband. They married and later joined the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1885. She became famous as the, 'Little Girl of the Western Plains'. Annie Oakley had a long career with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show where she became one of our most beloved American Legends.

Annie was born in 1860, to Jacob and Susan Moses, just after they left everything they knew in Pennsylvania and moved their family by wagon to Ohio. When Annie was just six, her father died and her mother was left to support the family of seven children. Annie took up shooting game to help out and soon became an expert. At the age of 16, she supported her family with her rifle, selling the game she shot to a local hotel. Three years later, the hotel owner backed her in a shooting match against Frank Butler, a renowned marksman. As Annie put it, she won the match and a husband. Thus, her show career began. Annie Oakley became a woman whose inborn talent led her to a career performing all over the United States and in Europe. She rubbed shoulders with many of the famous and royal people of the time.

Born into slavery around 1820, Harriet Tubman learned quickly that the life of a slave was full of hard work and danger. As a little girl, Harriet was a slave on a plantation in Maryland. One of her favorite outdoor chores was working in the apple orchard; picking, washing, and polishing the apples. She always felt that it was so unfair, that after doing all this work, slaves were forbidden to taste this wonderful fruit. After getting whipped for daring to take a bite of a juicy red apple, she promised herself two things: one day she was going to be free and when she was, she was going to have all the apples she wanted. In 1849, Harriet made her escape to the North by way of the Underground Railroad. However, Harriet was not happy being free when there were so many people still in slavery. Time and time again, Harriet went back to Maryland to guide other slaves to freedom. It took a long time but Harriet finally kept those two promises that she had made to herself.
