Did you know that some kinds of spiders are no larger than a grain of salt? Did you know that the largest spider is the size of a book and can capture medium-sized birds in the rainforest? What spider 'babysits' spiderlings for their first few days of life? How far can a jumping spider jump? And my favorite - how do spiders eat their food? Nic Bishop has done a beautiful job engaging the reader with wonderful /gruesome facts, as well as including one-of-a-kind photography.

Night Flight: Amelia Earhart Crosses the Atlantic

Robert Burleigh (2011), 40 pages
Illustrated by Wendell Minor
Audience: K - 3rd Grade
Category: Biography, Especially for Girls, Nonfiction, Picture Books

This book vividly describes Amelia Earhart's flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Amelia was the second person (and the first woman) to fly across the Atlantic-from Newfoundland, Canada to Northern Ireland on May 20, 1932. The paintings are beautiful and definitely complement the vivid text. The afterword is very informative(yet not too wordy) about Amelia's life. Amelia came up with the essence of Nike's slogan before they did. 'The most effective way to do it, is to do it.'

This unusual graphic novel tells the tales of women who dared to defy convention and do things that were forbidden for women to do--while disguised as men! The bold, black and white illustrations and distinctive style bring to life these fascinating stories. Read about a female pharoah, a woman who commanded a Viking raiding ship, a soldier, and more. These women showed bravery equal to or more than that of your typical hero. They risked all to be free, to love who they wanted, for power and for adventure, and their legendary tales make for an amazing read.

Odd Boy Out: Young Albert Einstein

Audience: K - 5th Grade
Category: Biography, Historical, Nonfiction

You've probably heard of Albert Einstein, but you may not know much about him. Albert was always a little different. He was smart, that's for sure, but also odd. He had a temper, and he did NOT get along with his little sister. As Albert grew up, he had trouble in school. His brain just worked a little differently. But Albert was always curious, and always trying to figure things out. His ideas would make him famous, and would lead to the inventions of all sorts of things that we use today. This biography doesn't try to explain all of the complicated things that Einstein thought about, but it will give you a good idea of what he was like.
