If we didn't have money, how many loaves of bread would a baker need to trade for a house? What would a dancer trade for a car? Money Madness talks all about money. What it is, how we use it, and why so many people want it. The history of trade is covered from the self-sufficient hunter/gatherers through the barter system and up to our modern day system of bills and coins.

The date is July 16, 1969. Responding to President John F. Kennedy's challenge to put a man on the moon before the decade is out, NASA has been preparing for this day. Three astronauts, Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin, have been preparing, too. Each step is rousingly described as the three men strap into the tiny space module, through Armstrong's 'giant leap,' to splash-down and the men's safe return to their families. This story of the United States' first flight to the moon is poetically told.

My Baseball Book

Gail Gibbons (2000), 24 pages
Illustrated by Gail Gibbons
Audience: Preschool - 1st Grade
Category: Nonfiction, Sports

My Baseball Book is a perfect introduction to the game of baseball. The book is full of baseball terminology, such as the rules of play, the gear, and the field layout. A youngster will learn all the basics they need to know in order to enjoy watching an older brother or sister play or to play themselves. The illustrations are colorful diagrams that add to the main text of the book and have helpful labels telling a child what the objects in the picture are (such as a batting helmet or a baseball diamond). Gail Gibbons narrates a fictitious baseball game, highlighting how all the terms and rules come together. While a child who has a basic understanding of baseball already could easily navigate this book, if a child is new to the game, an adult should probably read with them and embellish the text and diagrams. Set up perfectly for quizzing a child on objects in the pictures.

This is not your normal biography. This is Gary Paulsen, the man who wrote Hatchet, telling his own life story. But instead of just giving us boring dates, he tells about his dogs, and how they touched his life. The dogs took care of him, kept him out of trouble, and even saved his life. This man is crazy! Just ask his dogs. You won't want to put this book down.

My Light

Molly Bang (2004), 40 pages
Illustrated by Molly Bang

Category: Nonfiction

Molly Bang tells the story of electricity from the point of view of the sun. The sun tells the many ways of creating electricity, each beginning with the energy of its own light. The sun warms water, that turns to clouds, that rains down into rivers, that power hydroelectric plants. The sun warms the air, which creates wind, which powers wind turbines. The sun even provides energy to plants through photosynthesis, which then die and become the coal that is mined, and burned, to create electricity.
