This is a great book for beginning and reluctant readers. The stories are hilarious and short with goofy black and white illustrations that add to the humor. Because it is a collection of stories, the reader can be comfortable with reading a chapter book. A few of the chapter titles are Willy the Worm, Brave Dave and Mike's Bike.

An earthquake hits Never Land Island and strange happenings begin to occur: a barrel of gun powder washes ashore, falling into the hands of the pirates; the mermaids turn violent; and the boys, Shining Pearl, and Little Scallop are kidnapped. With time running out, the children must escape, figure out a way to save the mermaids, and stop Captain Hook before he destroys the Mollusk village. The series, A Never Land Book, begins with Escape from Carnivale, followed by Cave of the Dark Wind.
