Think danger and thrills are just for boys? Think again! This book tells the stories of 10 remarkable women who dared to attempt courageous feats. Read about Annie Edson Taylor, who went over Niagara Falls in a barrel, or Zazel, the woman who was shot out of a cannon. Ever heard of Sonora Webster Carver? They made the movie 'Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken' about her. She dove off a diving tower sixty feet in the air into a tank of water that wasn't that big. And she did it on the back of a horse. And she was blind. So if you're looking for a little excitement, read this book and find out what amazing things fearless women can really do.

Thirteen year old Samuel lives with his mother and father on a small frontier farm on the far edge of colonial Pennsylvania. His parents grew up in the city, but Samuel grew up in the wilderness. The woods are a part of him and he feels like a part of the woods. One day, he is out hunting for meat for his family when he smells smoke. By the time he gets back to his farm, he finds that their entire settlement has been attacked. Most of the settlers have been ruthlessly killed, but a few, including his parents, have been taken prisoner. Samuel uses his knowledge of the woods to track the attackers and their prisoners. In this way, he becomes deeply involved in the Revolutionary War which up to this point had seemed to have so little to do with him. Woods Runner tells a story of the harsh reality of the war that cost the colonists so much, but that ended in the birth of our country.

When Nate's leg is crushed under a wagon he can no longer help his father on their farm. He feels even worse when his father brings Worth, an orphan boy, home to help with the chores while Nate has to go to school. Nate's frustrations with book learning and Worth's clumsiness at farm chores make them resent each other more and more as time passes. There is, however, a battle brewing between ranchers and farmers for land, and Nate and Worth are forced to put their differences aside. Can a cripple and a city boy do anything against the fence cutters? You'll have to read to find out!
