In April 1865, the country was struggling to get back on its feet. The Civil War had ended, and as they began the slow process of rebuilding the Union, a confederate sympathizer named John Wilkes Booth plotted. Booth was a famous actor, and he hated Lincoln, calling him a tyrant and worse. After several failed plots, he shot Lincoln in the head. Then he ran, and was pursued by the law for 12 heart-stopping days before he was captured. Chasing Lincoln's Killer is an exciting historical thriller that describes the days leading up to Lincoln's assassination and follows Booth's desperate attempt to escape justice. Most of the dialogue was taken from original sources, which makes the book especially gripping. This book reads like fiction, and even those who are not fans of nonfiction will enjoy it.

On the way back from a trip to the New Orleans railway museum, Derek Stone, his nineteen-year-old brother Ronny, and their dad were in a train wreck. Everyone aboard was either presumed dead or in a coma, except for Derek. After three weeks, when he had been given up for dead, Ronny returned, only he wasn't the same. He didn't even seem to know who he was. Everyone said it was because of the trauma he experienced, but Derek couldn't shake the feeling that there was a more sinister reason: Ronny really was someone else. Soon, Ronny admitted that he was really the soul of a prison guard who died in an earlier train wreck and that the criminals he was transporting have taken on the bodies of other people, as well. Somehow, Derek and 'Ronny' must find them and stop them before they can terrorize New Orleans again. Warning: this book ends in a cliff-hanger. You will want to read the rest of the series. Book 2 is Bayou Dogs. Book 3 is The Red House. The Ghost Road is book 4.

Leanna attends a virtual school. For her history assignment she experiences a program that lets her actually experience being a runaway slave in Harriet Tubman's underground railroad. She then goes back to the virtual homeroom to discuss with her fellow students, who could be next door or across the country, how her experience compared to theirs. In the real world she lives with her mom in a community where most menial tasks are performed by manufactured biological clones who are treated as property, not human beings. As far as Leanna is concerned these creatures have no connection to the slaves in ancient United States history. But then her world is turned upside down. Her mom and her beloved Doc-Doc are both arrested for treason because they are members of the Liberty Bell Movement. Her mom calls herself an abolitionist, not an extremist. Leanna's assumptions about history, reality and her own identity are tested in this futuristic thriller.
