Joe, Sam, and Fred are celebrating Joe's birthday when Joe receives a mysterious gift from his uncle. It's a strange, dark blue book with silver designs on it. When Fred opens the book to a picture of a knight in black armor, the kitchen disappears, and the boys find themselves face to face with a Black Knight who declares, 'Halt, vile knaves. Prepare to die.' Can Joe, Sam, and Fred find a way to vanquish the Black Knight (and maybe a giant and a dragon) and get back to their own time?

Before T Rex ruled an earth populated with dinosaurs, a class of creatures called synapsids roamed our world. Some were gentle and some were dangerous predators. Through a 'time snag', one of each enters the current world into what is now Colorado. Two thirteen-year-olds, Phoebe and Rob are investigating the disappearance and death of pets in the area when they meet Sid, a gentle beast, who is being stalked by the vicious gorgonopsid. The two friends find out they must help Sid send the gorgon back to its own time to insure the evolution of all things, especially humans. This exciting time travel adventure has wonderful characters, both, good and evil, human and beast.
