'The Hallelujah Flight' by Phil Bildner is an exciting picture book telling about the heroic transcontinental flight of the African-American pilot, James Banning. Overcoming many obstacles; a beat-up 0XX6 Eagle Rock plane, a severe shortage of supplies, and racial prejudice, James Banning and his copilot Thomas Allen, captured the hearts of the American people when they flew over New York Harbor on October 9, 1932 completing their historic flight. Called the 'Flying Hoboes' because of their plane's condition and their shortage of supplies, James and Thomas became an inspiration to many Americans that all things are possible.

Harold and the Purple Crayon: Under the Sea

Liza Baker (2003), 32 pages
Illustrated by Kevin Murawski
Audience: 1st Grade - 2nd Grade
Category: Adventure, Easy Reader, Fiction
Add Your Comments | Add to MyBookList | Email Review
One night in bed, Harold is too hot, and he decides to draw himself a sea with his purple crayon. Harold's purple crayon creates a new world for him to explore. This imaginative story about Harold's adventure under the sea is a fun read. Large illustrations cover most of each page, and the bottom third of the page contains text (with about one to three sentences per page). Harold's adventure is a great choice for readers whose skill levels are increasing beyond simple sentences and, of course, anyone who loves to pretend! (Reading Level: 2.8)
