In 1852, Abbie's father moves the whole family to Matinicus Rock to be the lighthouse keeper there and Abbie becomes his assistant. She learns to care for the lights, keeping them clean and lit in order to guide ships around the treacherous rocks along the shore. Then her father has to make an emergency trip to the mainland for supplies. A violent storm hits and Abbie has to care for her younger sisters, her ailing mother and the precious lights. This exciting adventure is based on the true life of Abbie Burgess who helped care for the lighthouse for 22 years.
Most of us know the story of Tom and his relationship with Aunt Polly, Becky and Huck. Tom is an orphan who lives with Aunt Polly and her son, Sid. Becky is his true love even though he tries to make her jealous. Tom does know how to get into 'sticky' situations which is the cause of Aunt Polly's slipper on his backside. With the anime-inspired artwork, the story is told with verve and fascination. In some of the illustrations, it is difficult to tell who is speaking, but the reader is eventually able to sort out the differences in the characterization of Tom and Huck.
