Are You Chicken?

Recently some of the most popular books at the St. Charles Public Library are about raising your own chickens. Who’d have guessed? I wonder if our neighbors are checking them out in the hope that they’ll be able to have their own chickens soon?

As someone that grew up in a fairly rural community, the recent trend to be excited about urban chickens surprises me a little. That might be because I still hold a grudge against Grandma’s mean chickens who pecked at me. On the other hand, I know what “real” fresh eggs taste like, how factory farm chickens are raised, and the value of knowing exactly where your food comes from. So, I guess it’s not so surprising after all.
