Fourth of July Fireworks.jpg

Ever wonder why we shoot off fireworks on July 4th? Check out this video clip from the History Channel for some background on this patriotic holiday.
To watch some fabulous fireworks check out this web site.
There has been a big change this year for the annual July 4th fireworks display in Chicago. In the past, the fireworks display has been on July 3rd in Grant Park. This year there will be 3 smaller displays on July 4th itself, one at Navy Pier, another at a North lakefront location, and the third at a South lakefront location. Here is more information.
The City of St. Charles’ annual fireworks extravaganza will be held at dark on Sunday, July 4 and can be best viewed at Pottawatomie Park or Ferson Creek Park.

Rainy Day Project http://www.stcharleslibrary.org/blog/good2know/images/rain4.jpg

It’s raining, it’s pouring, why not harvest that water into a rain barrel?
The internet is overflowing with information about rain barrels. YouTube will shower you with DIY videos on the topic of rainwater conservation. And, of course, SCPL’s catch basin of databases runneth over with great articles from journals and newspapers.
Here’s a fact: the average 2000 square foot roof will fill a 55 gallon rain barrel with only ¼ inch of rain! Drip, drip, drip.
Books, want ‘em? Got ‘em.

And finally, now that you’re exhausted from your research, there are local authorities thirsting to help. The Kane Dupage Soil & Water Conservation District, The University of Illinois Extension Service as well as Kane County’s website, (check out their conservation FAQs) are all good local places to learn more about rain harvesting.
