In Chapter 6, Laura remembers when Luka catches a little girl’s lost balloon and returns it to her. Afterwards he says, “You know, that may be the best thing I’ve ever done with my life” (p. 99). This incident is one Laura knows she will never forget and prompts her to wonder what was the best thing she had had ever done with her life. How would you answer this question?
Going further, notice that in Chapter 3, there is a conversation between Luka and the blind man:
“You know you talk in your sleep,” the blind man said… “I do? What do I say?” “‘They’re still down there.’ ‘The best thing I’ve ever done.’ That sort of thing.” Luka thought about it for a minute. “I have absolutely no idea what that means,” he said.
Do you think you can even really know what your “best thing” is or will it end up being, “some small, half-conscious act of kindness” that you don’t even remember?
