Stephen King and Family

It’s a King Thing!

Few families are fortunate enough to have one successful author under their roof, much less two, but what about five, as is the case of the phenomenally prolific author, Stephen King. Not only has King been pounding out the best-sellers since his horror classic, Carrie, was published in 1973, his wife, Tabitha, sons Joe and Owen, and even Owen’s wife, Kelly Braffett, are popular authors in their own right.

Stephen King, of course, is best known for such cult classics as Salem’s Lot, The Stand and The Shining. The author of some 57 novels—including eight under the pseudonym Richard Bachman—Stephen is also the author of 17 novellas, eight works of non-fiction, and 11 short story collections. He has written screenplays and dozens of movies, and made-for-TV mini-series have been based on his work.

Wife Tabitha King met her husband in college. The third of six daughters in a family of eight, Tabitha Spruce King grew up in a small town north of Bangor, and it is this rural Maine milieu that has inspired the setting for her well-received series of novels set in the fictional town of Nodd’s Ridge, Maine—Pearl, The Book of Reuben and One on One. In a Publisher’s Weekly interview, writer Kathryn Shattuck described Tabitha as “headstrong and outspoken, and any expectations of a trophy wife riding on her husband’s coattails come crashing down. Tabitha King is the real thing.”

Joe Hill is the oldest son of Stephen and Tabitha King. Joe Hill is the pen name for Joseph Hillstrom King; Hill uses a pen name to not be recognized as the son of Stephen King. Like his father, Hill writes horror, dark fantasy, and science fiction. Reviewers praise Hill’s devilishly enjoyable books, with the Los Angeles Times publishing on the release of Horns,“fire and brimstone have rarely looked this good.”

Owen King, the youngest son of Stephen and Tabitha King, is known for writing short stories. He also co-wrote Intro to Alien Invasion with Mark Jude Poirier and Sleeping Beauties with his father which will be released in 2017.
