  • Bartleby.com Great Books Onlineexternal link - A good online encyclopedia which is a compendium of several encyclopedias and a collection of fact books, quotation sources, classic books, and other reference works.
  • Dictionary.comexternal link - This site is based on the American Heritage Dictionary Third Edition. Offers other links to newspaper collections
  • Encartaexternal link - Their online encyclopedia has great visuals, but the content is not very extensive. The dictionary will pronounce the words for you. There is also an atlas. Encarta also offers columns for parents and young people on topics of importance in reading, school, educational activities and parenting.
  • Fifty States and Capitalsexternal link - Organizes links to a very large array of information on each state, plus five U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. Besides the usual geographic, demographic, political, historical, economic, and tourist information, there are links and images for state birds, flags, songs, flowers, trees, maps, license plates, and symbols, and to whatever live "Web cams" are available online. There are links to educational systems and departments, libraries, community Web pages, weather, genealogical societies, motor vehicle departments, and some features that may be unique to a particular state, such as California missions. There is also a separate College and University Directory, and a link to the E-Conflict World Encyclopedia for basic information on all the world's countries and territories.
  • Google Language Toolsexternal link - Find web sites in other languages, translate foreign language text or web sites into English, and view the Google interface in a variety of languages.
  • Information Pleaseexternal link - A one-stop source for ready reference with material from the Information Please Almanac, the ESPN Information Please Sports Almanac, and The A&E Entertainment Almanac as well as the Random House Webster's College Dictionary and The Columbia Encyclopedia. The main page is designed for quick access with both a search form and an index of hot links under nine broad topics. Other handy features include: facts behind the news, today in history, a biography search, and phone and e-mail directories.
  • Itoolsexternal link - A handy place to find language translator and currency converter links, map and direction sources, search tools, and research sources. Contains advertising.
  • learn2.comexternal link - Step-by-step directions on everything from how to tie a neck tie to how to jump-start a car.
  • Martindale's "The Reference Desk"external link - The resource covers a wide range of topics, including international business, astronomy, entertainment, and the arts, that are divided into "Information Centers" for easier browsing.
  • Nobel Foundationexternal link - This is the official site of the Nobel Foundation, which awards prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. This site includes a list of all winners from 1901 to date, biographical information on the awardees, information on the selection process for all six of the Nobel prize awarding institutions/areas, history behind the prizes, and more.
  • Online Conversionexternal link - Converts temperature, weights, volume, cooking terms, length, energy, force, clothing sizes worldwide, lots more.
  • Quotationsexternal link - Internet Public Library guide designed for anyone who is looking for quotations or their sources. Both print-based and Web-based sources are included.
  • S.O.S. Mathexternal link - This site is a place for students and educators to quickly access mathematical tables and formulas.
  • Thesaurus.comexternal link - Sister site to Dictionary.com
  • U.S. Postal Serviceexternal link - Select "Find ZIP Codes." When you enter an address, the search will give you the ZIP+4 info.
  • The WWW Unit Converterexternal link - Calculates equivalences in area, density, energy, force, length, mass, power, pressure, speed, temperature, and volume.
  • yourDictionary.comexternal link - Language and multi-lingual dictionaries, translations, language guesser, word games, specialty dictionaries, and word of the day.

Subscription Sites

These Premium Search Databases are available to St. Charles Public Library card-holders only. Choose the particular database you want, then enter your St. Charles Library card number, which is the barcode number on the back of the card and PIN number. Do not use any spaces or dashes.
