If you’re looking for a great story, discussable titles and study guides for your book club, or someone to chat with about a favorite author or genre, stop by the Readers Services Desk and meet a fellow book lover. The Readers Services librarians have a variety of reading tastes, and you’re sure to find one whose interests match yours. They’ll help you find the latest fiction and nonfiction and discover some older favorites. They’d love to hear your recommendations as well!

Readers Services (RS) behind-the-scenes projects include a variety of tasks. Staff create book lists that cover all types of fiction, timely nonfiction subjects, author profiles, and seasonal selections. Printed copies of these lists are available with their corresponding displays in the RS area. Most displays change on a monthly basis, so if you’re looking for an older list, please let us know.

The St. Charles Public Library’s book discussion groups meet on the second Tuesday of each month. The morning group meets at 10 am and the evening group at 7 pm. The groups began in 1997 and have discussed a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction titles based on suggestions by individual members.

The newest and most exciting project is our Read@SCPL blog. You’ll find information on cultural events, film and book reviews by our staff, interesting authors, and some thoughtprovoking essays. And because it’s a blog, it’s a place where you too can share your thoughts and comments.

Readers Services also collects books for Illinois Youth Center (IYC), the Elgin Mental Health Library, the St. Charles Juvenile Justice Center, and the Kane County Adult and Juvenile Correctional Facilities. Through the Holiday Giving Tree in the Library’s lobby, money for books is collected for students at the IYC–St. Charles.

One of our most enjoyable events is the annual Summer Reading Program. Adults can join this program and log-in their reading on a weekly basis to be eligible for drawings for gift certificates to local businesses. Prizes are awarded. Patrons also can compete in weekly trivia contests. The highlight of summer reading for participants is the Ice Cream Social in July. Ice cream, music, and games for the whole family are part of this annual event.
