Wednesday, April 4 at 7 p.m. – JoAnn King will present events that led up to the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, tell about life in the internment camps, her family’s experiences, personal photos, and more.

Tuesday, April 10 at 7 p.m. - Author Cynthia Kadohata will talk to adults and students about her books Weedflowerand Kira-Kira. These books will be available for purchase and autographing following the presentation.

Friday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m. – Come enjoy a cultural film about Japan and enjoy tasting treats from local Japanese restaurants.
Our Community Reads Family Day
Sunday, April 15 from 2-3:30 p.m. – Entertainment for all ages. Enjoy demonstrations of calligraphy by Ayumi Soobratty and origami in the Meeting Room. Listen to stories in the Helen Gale Story Room. Hear the Spring Valley Koto Ensemble in the Carnegie Community Room.
Author Julie Otsuka
Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. – Author Julie Otsuka will discuss her book When the Emperor Was Divine. Books will be available for purchase and autographing following the presentation.
NOTE: During the day on Wednesday, April 18 and Thursday, April 19, Ms. Otsuka will be visiting with students at the local middle and high schools and Elgin Community College.

Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m. – Folktales of Japan with storyteller Anne Shimojima. Meet a clever judge, a wise old woman, a mysterious crane, a revengeful snake, and a headless samurai in these tales of magic, transformation, greed punished, and kindness rewarded. Especially for students and adults.
