- QuestionPoint* patrons are provided with an OCLC Privacy Statement that states, "Any personal information collected is disclosed only to the extent necessary to fulfill your request for information." See: QuestionPoint Patron Terms of Service
- In addition, Cooperative librarians should adhere to standards of professional conduct regarding patron privacy.
See: Code of Ethics of the American Library Association
- Patrons' personally identifiable information should be kept confidential at all times, except:
- When required by law and library policies. This refers to policies of the patron’s library and the laws in that library’s state.
- As necessary to answer a question
- As necessary to evaluate the service
- Personally identifiable information is anything that could identify a patron in whole or in part, including name, email address, IP address, physical location, library barcode and other information that may be recorded when the patron signs in or during the chat or email conversation.
*QuestionPoint is a service of OCLC that provides AskAway Illinois with chat software. Through the QuestionPoint 27/7 Cooperative, librarians throughout Illinois and the United States work together to answer patron questions. If you login outside of the Library’s regular hours, you are likely to chat with one of the Cooperative’s librarians. In addition, St. Charles Public Library librarians may answer questions for patrons outside of our Library District through this service.
